Startpoint Lighthouse
As we had family visiting we decided it was a good excuse and about time to take a trip to Start Point Lighthouse.
Situated along the Devon Coast, Start Point is one of the most exposed peninsulas in England.
If you have never been it is well worth a trip for the stunning scenery alone. The coast sweeps around as far as the eye can see and it feels lovely and remote.
We set off on a chilly but glorious day and started on the walk down to the lighthouse itself from the car park whilst the blue water below glimmered in the sun. From far off we could see the bright white lighthouse but it was the scale of it that hit us when we were staring up from the bottom.
Some of us were less keen about the height so stayed with our feet on the ground. But we did hear the first half of the tour and the 150 years that Start Point has been guiding ships safely away from danger. Those with a head for heights climbed the winding stairs to the top, seeing how life had changed for the families who lived and worked there until it was automated and the need for lighthouse keepers was gone.
And what made it most worthwhile was the breathtaking panoramic views around the bay and thats one treat you won't get unless you have scaled this beautiful lighthouse.
The Lighthouse is only open certain days so it is worthwhile checking on the Trinity house website beforehand. http://www.trinityhouse.co.uk/
